In Florida our HVAC (Heating/Ventilation/Air Conditioning) systems work very hard, but this doesn't mean that every time something goes wrong with them they instantly need to be replaced. Too many times I see someone have an issue with their HVAC and immediately the service person sells them a new system and with the average cost of $4,000 to $7,000 this is no small investment. Here are some suggestions to keep your HVAC system going and potentially save you some money.
Annual servicing - Have your HVAC system serviced by a licensed technician annually. Maintenance is the biggest factor in gaining longevity out of your system.
Change the filter - It amazes me how many homes I inspect where the filter looks like it hasn't been changed in years. This is how your HVAC systems breathes and it also plays a big role in the quality of air flowing through your home. I change mine every 45 to 60 days.
Turn it up 1 degree - If you normally keep your HVAC system set at 75 degrees in the summer push it up to 76. You will quickly adjust to the minor change and you system will run less reducing the amount of time it is working.
Keep it clean - For both the interior Handler and the exterior Compressor too often I see items packed all around the handler or weeds and vegetation grown over the compressor. Keep the HVAC system clear of items and vegetation will allow it to work more efficiently. This is most important with the outside Compressor. Vegetation really can ruin a compressor fast.
